Do you know how to make ground beef stretch further without sacrificing flavor?

Absolutely — the trick is adding umami-rich ingredients that make the beef taste MORE beefy, not less. When you do this right, no one notices you've stretched the portion. The classic move is mixing in finely minced mushrooms (especially cremini or shiitake). They're about 90% water, so they add bulk without much cost, but they're loaded with glutamates — the same compound that makes beef savory. Sauté them first to cook off moisture, then mix them in. You can replace 20–30% of the beef this way and actually deepen the flavor. Soy sauce or fish sauce do the same job: a teaspoon or two adds so much savory depth that a smaller amount of beef feels satisfying. Another route is cooking the beef with lots of aromatics and spices — onions, garlic, tomato paste, cumin, chili powder. These build flavor layers so the dish tastes rich and intentional, not skimpy. A good taco filling or Bolognese works this way naturally. The key principle: when you amp up umami and aromatic flavor, the brain registers "this is a satisfying, flavorful dish" even if there's less meat. It's not a trick — it's just cooking smarter. Are you planning a specific dish, like tacos or a sauce, where you want to stretch ground beef?
